Before you complain about how an organization has dumb rules and doesn’t help, think about this:
Folks want to scream about funding spots making them “jump through hoops” but before the hoops, folks used to get THOUSANDS for help and were being irresponsible with their BLESSING.
Getting help for rent one month and getting evicted the next cause they were using government money to pay rent but their own money for fun and asking for more assistance the following month- just WILD stuff.
Homeless shelters used to allow you to use more than one shelter a year until folks treated that like an OPTION and not a RESOURCE, not caring about rules cause “if it don’t work here, I’ll just go to the other one”- until folks stopped letting people run through all the shelters cause they “can’t take” someone’s mouth or “don’t like” the shelter rules.
Some folks go so far as going to the YWCA for DV shelter and want their “abuser” to pick them up off camera so they wouldn’t know they’re making up a DV story for housing perks.
Listen, It’s EASY to say systems aren’t helping until you’ve worked them and seen how folks WORK a system.
So yes, if you misuse a lifeboat, eventually it turns into a smaller resource like a life jacket, until help eventually just ends up being a brochure handed to you on “ways to not drown”.
That’s what happens when you USE a system rather than use a system. Organizations have a right to protect their resources from being exploited.
Think about that the next time you joyfully decide to misuse or abuse “free help”.Everything abused eventually ceases to exist
…..and we can’t afford that.
